Join us in the Kerry Dark Sky Reserve, one of the only inhabited dark sky reserves in the world, to celebrate the best of what south Kerry has to offer – our landscape, our heritage and culture, our community and our dark skies.
The Skellig Coast Dark Sky Festival is an annual event that celebrates the natural beauty of the night sky. It is festival that draws visitors from all over the world to marvel at the wonders of the dark sky that are often obscured by the light pollution of cities and towns. The 2023 festival will be held from the 24th-26th March. One of the highlights of the festival will be the Astrophotography Exhibition sponsored by Skellig Six18 Distillery & Visitor Experience. We celebrate life’s journeys at Skellig Six18. So many people here used the starts to navigate on land and at sea, the stars were the first compass. And maybe they continue to guide people in their lives in other ways now too
There are many events happening throughout the Skellig Coast Dark Sky Reserve, which is unusual even in the rare world of global dark sky reserves as there are communities and businesses based right there, living, and working away in the Reserve.
The Kerry Dark Sky Reserve sits here on the Skellig Coast , Co. Kerry on SW Coast of Ireland. It is about 700 square km in size. Our rural location between the Atlantic Ocean on 3 sides and the Kerry Mountains on the other side and provides great natural protection against light pollution of the other larger towns in Kerry over the mountains to the East. There is nothing on the North, South, East or West except the Atlantic Ocean
Overall, the Skellig Coast Dark Sky Festival is a unique and exciting event that celebrates the natural beauty of the night sky in a stunning location. With a range of events and activities on offer, visitors can experience the wonder of the dark sky as well as the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the Skellig Coast during the day.
