We are proud to announce that our commitment to sustainability was certified in May 2021, when Skellig Six18 became a fully verified member of Origin Green – Ireland’s pioneering food and drink sustainability programme.

We have ambitions to put Cahersiveen on the global spirits stage by producing world class Irish Gin and Whiskey at the Skellig Six18 Distillery. Hand in hand with these ambitions, comes a responsibility to operate in a manner which minimises the negative impact we have upon the environment, and which is beneficial to our local community here in Uíbh Ráthach. We are proud that our commitment to this responsibility was recently certified, when Skellig Six18 became a fully verified member of Origin Green.

Origin Green is Ireland’s founding food and drink sustainability programme. This programme is the worlds’ only national food and drink sustainability programme and enables the industry to set and achieve measurable sustainability targets that respect the environment and serve local communities more effectively.

In order to become an Origin Green member, we submitted a sustainability plan for the period 2021-2025 outlining our ambitions, targets, and initiatives across the pillars of water, packaging, raw materials, and community engagement. Our progress as a verified member will be monitored and reviewed annually by Bord Bia, and independent auditors Mabbett. Our commitments include reducing our mains water usage per litre of product output through an improved water usage monitoring system, and the installation of a rainwater harvesting system upon the addition of the whiskey plant to the Skellig Six18 Distillery. We also intend to increase the proportion our raw materials coming from suppliers who hold internationally recognised sustainability certifications with the implementation of a new sustainable procurement policy.

Before our Origin Green verification, we had already taken sustainable actions on packaging. This entailed the sourcing of 100% recyclable packaging which we use for all orders made on our online shop, at our distillery, and through our corporate gifting programme. We are going to build on this with a commitment to only use fully recyclable or compostable packaging in all new product releases moving forward.

Similarly, we pride ourselves on the level of engagement we already have with our local community. We use local suppliers where possible, we gave local food producers an opportunity to showcase their craft when we hosted Aonach Bia at the distillery in 2019, and we made a €1000 donation to local charity Cúnamh Iveragh in 2020 – with another donation in the offing for 2021. Through Origin Green, we have committed to further increasing the amount of time we give to engaging with local businesses and organisations with a view to increasing our contribution to the overall development of the South Kerry area. Watch this space!

As we move through our sustainability plan and grow further as a business, we will take on further initiatives, develop our existing targets, and set new ones, always with the end goal of protecting our beautiful, natural landscapes, and contributing to the development of our local community. We are already working on a new initiative which aims to reduce our carbon footprint. We look forward to sharing news of this with you over the coming months.

We hope our actions encourage you to become more environmentally conscious too, so that we can collectively protect our place for generations to come.
