Here, in our remote corner of the world, we are made a little differently. This wild coastline has not always made life easy for locals who have worked hard to make a living or who had to leave for foreign shores. There is an essence in us all that calls for opportunity and a life well-led. A spark in us to persevere through challenges, appreciate what we have and acknowledge each step of the journey, those steps build our character.
We’re inspired by the storytellers, the adventurers and the hard workers, of stories of travel and invention, of graft and perseverance. The journeys that take us to the far corners of the world and bring us right back here to the Skellig Coast. Those individuals who push themselves through tenacity, determination and grit to achieve their life’s purpose, putting one foot in front of the other. The birds off the Skellig coast, who brave the elements crashing in off the Atlantic, they plummet but then they soar. Those that teach us important lessons about life, who are humble in their achievements but who strive for opportunity and greatness.
Our Distillery was born out of the Skellig community that took on seemingly impossible challenges built at the edge of two worlds in the “town that climbs the mountain and looks upon the sea”. For centuries, communities have settled in this seemingly inhospitable landscape, battling the hostile beauty of the sea and land. This wild beauty is untamed and free, like the people. We are together here. Whether it has been a few months, a year or many more, our families and friends, old and new, enjoy the return to us to feel the wind and sea spray off the Atlantic on their faces and to taste that salty air.
Each step, putting one foot in front of the other, gives you a better view than before, so we are constantly learning to keep moving and enjoy the journey as we climb. Our award-winning Visitor Experience on the Ring of Kerry is open, learn more about the characterful journey, our gin-making process and our world-class whiskey.
It is time now for us to return to our roots. Our Skellig Six18 is expanding, bringing exciting opportunities for both local and international individuals looking to become a part of something special. The work will be varied and challenging but those with muinín and an ability to work well with a team will flourish. Making sure that we are good employers here locally is a very important goal for the business. We find excellence here all the time in this remote corner of Ireland where our team works hard but also has a great balance in their lives. Nobody is just “one thing” in the Distillery.
