We are proud of our commitment to sustainability

At Skellig Six18 Distillery, we are dedicated to making progress in sustainability. We understand that sustainability is a continuous journey, not a final destination, especially when it comes to sustainable tourism. That’s why we are collaborating with our suppliers and visitors to achieve our goal of becoming a carbon-positive, award-winning tourist attraction in the future. As we gradually implement changes to play a greater role in the circular economy here on the Skellig Coast, we will keep you informed of our progress. Our aim is to showcase Cahersiveen on the global spirits scene by producing top-notch Irish Gin and Whiskey at Skellig Six18 Distillery. However, with this aspiration comes the responsibility to operate in a way that minimizes our environmental footprint and benefits our local community here in Uíbh Ráthach.

Sustainable Tourism Mission Statement:
Skellig Six18 Distillery is dedicated to upholding and upkeeping the utmost levels of sustainable tourism in the domains of the environment, community, work culture, and visitor experience. Our objective is to serve our community via our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects and to safeguard our local environment while facilitating tours to our Distillery site.

Our Sustainability Policy:
We take great pride in our membership with Origin Green, Ireland’s premier food and drink sustainability program. As the world’s only national initiative of its kind, Origin Green empowers the industry to establish and achieve measurable sustainability objectives that uphold the environment and benefit local communities.
To attain our membership status, we submitted a comprehensive sustainability plan covering the period of 2021-2025, which highlights our aspirations, targets, and initiatives across key areas such as water, packaging, raw materials, and community involvement. Our progress as a verified member will be evaluated annually by Bord Bia and independent auditors Mabbett. Our commitments include reducing our consumption of mains water per litre of product output via an enhanced water usage monitoring system, as well as implementing a rainwater harvesting system in the Skellig Six18 Distillery to coincide with the addition of the whiskey plant. Additionally, we aim to enhance the proportion of our raw materials sourced from suppliers who hold internationally recognized sustainability certifications by implementing a sustainable procurement policy.

Local & Economic:
At Skellig Six18 Distillery, we strongly believe in the importance of supporting our local economy. As a responsible corporate citizen, we are committed to contributing to the growth and development of the local community by upholding and promoting sustainable practices.
To achieve this goal, we prioritize the employment of local residents and sourcing goods and services from local businesses. By supporting local employment, we are not only creating job opportunities but also promoting economic growth and stability within our community. We also strive to source sustainably produced goods locally, reducing our carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices.
Additionally, we aim to provide our customers with information about other local products and services. By doing so, we hope to encourage our visitors to support other local businesses, thereby contributing to the overall growth and development of our community.
Through these efforts, we are committed to making a positive impact on our local economy and community, while promoting sustainable practices and responsible tourism.

Community:
Our goal is to have a positive social impact on both visitors and local communities through our mutually beneficial business collaborations and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. At the same time, we take pride in our strong relationship with the local community. We prioritize sourcing goods and services from local suppliers whenever possible, and we have provided a platform for local food producers to showcase their craft at our distillery during the Aonach Bia events in 2019, 2021, and 2022. As an Origin Green member, we have committed to increasing our engagement with local businesses and organizations, with the aim of further contributing to the development of the South Kerry area.

Environment:
At Skellig Six18 Distillery, we prioritize nature in everything we do, from our plant growth and botanical harvesting methods to our packaging choices. Sustainability for us is not just about reducing plastic usage and recycling, but about fostering a symbiotic relationship with nature, where balance is key. Our aim is to maintain this balance to achieve sustainable outcomes.
Even before our Origin Green verification, we had already taken sustainable actions, such as sourcing 100% recyclable packaging for all online orders, distillery sales, and corporate gifting programs. Moving forward, we are committed to only using fully recyclable or compostable packaging in all new product releases.
We also strive to improve our natural resource management, reduce waste, and source materials that promote a circular economy. As part of our commitment to reducing non-renewable resource usage, we are working with our suppliers to phase out single-use plastics. We also aim to boost biodiversity on our site by planting seasonal plants and botanicals for future use.
